blog: Flintoff playing on Australians’ minds, says Strauss

England captain Andrew Strauss feels Andrew Flintoff’s explosive pace, despite his chronic knee injury, has tormented the Australian batsmen.
Flintoff, who snared his third five-wicket haul in 77 Tests at Lord’s in the second Ashes Test, had himself admitted tipping his pace by a notch.

Asked if Flintoff’s fabulous 5-92 to propel England to victory at Lord’s was more a skill-related or mental triumph, Strauss replied: “A bit of both.”

Strauss, who could not take the ball from Flintoff’s hands on the final morning at Lord’s, believes the injury-riddled 31-year-old may still be the most threatening fast bowler in world cricket.

“If you were to list the top three bowlers in world cricket that batsmen don’t want to face, Fred is going to be on that list and probably at the top of it,” Strauss was quoted as saying in The Australian.

“No one enjoys facing him and sometimes he doesn’t get his just rewards for the hostility he bowls with,” Strauss said.

“That consistent hostility is unpleasant. It is, quite frankly, unpleasant in the nets and it’s not much fun in the middle either.”

blog: Flower backs Flintoff to be “fit and firing” for the Ashes

England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is almost certain to make his way back into the team for the Ashes.

Flintoff, who has been out of action for nearly three months after undergoing a knee surgery, showed signs that he is ready to take the field once again when he took six wickets in his comeback match against Durham last week.

It is expected that Flintoff will take on the field in the practice match against the Warwickshire beginning from July 1.

English coach Andy Flower said that Freddie has virtually recovered from the operation on his right knee.

“It is very good news that Andrew is back playing again and apparently recovered from his operation. I’d think Flintoff would be in the squad for the match against Warwickshire. He is a shoo-in for the First Test if he is fit and firing,” The Sun quoted Flower, as saying.

blog: Swann sorry KP not there for Ashes, but says Freddie will do the job

England off-spinner Graeme Swann has described the exit of star batsman Kevin Pietersen from the remaining three Tests of the ongoing Ashes series as a major blow for the hosts, but believes that having all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will be enough to win back the Ashes.

In article for The Sun, Swann recalls his over two-decade-long association with Flintoff, and says that he still retains the power and skill of yore to tear through the Australian batting line up.

“I’ve known Andrew Flintoff since he was 10 and he could do incredible things even then. He was the only 10-year-old I’ve ever seen with the strength to send down a short one. Twenty years later, the Aussies discovered all about that power and skill as Freddie tore into their batsmen in the Lord’s Test. Now, Freddie is going to prove even more important in our effort to win back The Ashes,” said Swann.

Describing the victory at Lords to go one up in the series as fantastic, Swann said: “I’ll struggle in my career to have a greater moment than taking the wicket that clinched England’s first Ashes victory at the home of cricket for 75 years.”

blog:Broad says England in a great position to win Ashes

Fast bowler Stuart Broad believes that England are in a great position to win the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval after bundling out the Australians for 160 and taking an overall lead of 230 runs on the second day of the game.

Broad who contributed significantly to the Australian collapse by claiming five wickets for 37 runs, said: “We are in a great position. It was a fantastic experience for me, everything we did seemed to work.””The first hour in the morning will be crucial. We have some big hitters with the likes of Freddie Flintoff and Matt Prior and if we can get some more runs, we can build a great platform,” he added. While admitting that England did not want to lose wickets in its second innings, he said: “But to see what the ball is doing off the pitch gives us great encouragement. I’ll take setting them 400 to win.””It was great to have my family here. My mum lost her voice and I could see her in the crowd. My sister works for the ECB so I guess she played her part too. My dad has his Ashes story, I hope to have my own by Monday,” The Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

blog:Freddie out for dinner with missus and family after Ashes victory

England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who is to go under the knife on Tuesday, will take his wife Rachael, parents and kids out for dinner, to celebrate the return of the Ashes with the 197-run victory over Australia at The Oval.

“I will take the missus out for dinner and spend the day with my family. But I’ll be ‘nil by mouth’ after midnight on Monday because of the operation,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Freddie hurled and hugged his son Corey and sister Holly, five, after the win, while Rachael brought one-year-old son Rocky down from the stands.

Freddie’s emotional dad Colin, 57, joined the wild celebrations, shedding tears of joy as he enjoyed the magical moment. The star’s proud mum Susan also came over to give him a hug.

Fred, who will have an operation to fix a knee injury tomorrow, said: “This is a special moment. I was nearly in tears when I saw my Mum up there. It’s like a dream, quite surreal at the moment. I don’t know what to do with myself.”

blog:England’s Ashes winners set for lucrative advert deals

England’s Ashes-winning cricketers are now hot commercial properties.

According to John Taylor, chairman of Sports Impact, a leading consultancy, “Brands want to be associated with winners and the whole country will see England’s cricketers in that category again now.”

When England won the Ashes in 2005, the stars were Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen. This time the poster boy will be Stuart Broad, 23, the Nottinghamshire all-rounder named Man of the Match yesterday after taking five Australian wickets.

Broad has all the attributes to become a marketing man’s dream.

“He is intelligent, articulate and good looking, he can appeal to both males and females and is perfect to attract the elusive 18 to 30 male advertising market,” The Times quoted Taylor, as saying.

Broad opted not to take part in the lucrative Indian Premier League tournament, preferring instead to concentrate on the Ashes.

blog: Goa government forcing us to leave: casino operators

The Goa government is forcing offshore casinos to move their vessels out of the Mandovi river and park them into a bay “known for choppy seas and unstable navigation conditions”, casino operators said Monday.
The “ill-conceived” cabinet decision to move the casino vessels into the Aguada bay was enforced on the Captain of Ports (CoP) department, which overlooks Goa’s minor ports along the various water bodies, Srinivas Nair of the Association of Offshor Casinos (AOC) told reporters.

“The decision was not taken by CoP. The cabinet decision to shift the offshore casinos from the Mandovi river to the Aguada bay was enforced on them,” Nair said.

The offshore casino operators have approached the Panaji bench of the Bombay High Court challenging the government decision to shift the casinos from the Mandovi due to congestion in the river’s navigational channel.

At present, six offshore casinos are parked in the Mandovi river and one more is expected to arrive and begin operations later this year.

The casinos have faced stiff opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and civil society groups that have demanded that the government order the vessels out of the state.
